Anatomical Nomenclature Flashcards
Superior
Toward the head
Inferior
Toward the feet
Anterior (ventral)
Toward the front
Posterior (dorsal)
Toward the back (think dorsal fin on shark)
Median Plane (midsagittal plane)
Divides body into equal right and left halves
Sagittal Plane
Parallel to median
Median
At the midline (ex. Nose)
Medial
Closer to the median plane or midline
Lateral
Farther from midline
Proximal
Closer to origin
Distal
Farther from origin
Ispilateral
Same side
Contralateral
Opposite side
Superficial
Surface
Deep
Away from body surface
Anatomical Nomenclature
THUMBS FACING OUT
Sections
Slices that are taken from the body in order to more closely inspect the tissues. Sections are cut along the planes.
Transverse
Horizontal Plane
Coronal
Frontal Plane
Midsagittal
Median Plane
Oblique Plane
Any plane that deviates from the four aforementioned planes
Cross section (not sure about)
Any one of an infinite number of possible cuts across the body or one of it’s limbs at RIGHT ANGLES to its LONG AXIS.
Long Axis (not sure about)
From head to toe. Ex. Tooth long axis is chewing surface down to root.
Longitudinal Section (not sure about)
Any of the infinite number of possible cuts that PARALLEL the LONG AXIS of the body or it’s components.
