Intro to Dentitions Flashcards
Functions of Teeth
Mastication (chewing) Speaking Place Holder Maintain bone levels in jaws Self Esteem
Primary Dentition (deciduous…like trees. Trees lose their leaves)
Erupt in childhood and are exfoliated prior to eruption of the permanent dentition
Permanent Dentition (secondary, succedaneous)
Succedaneous because many of the teeth in this dentition SUCCEED primary teeth (think royalty and succession)
Permanent Molars
ARE NONSUCCEDANEOUS. they are not preceded by primary teeth. ***
Exfoliation
Losing teeth
Primary Dentition
10 teeth per arch
8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 molars
Under 5 years old = 20 teeth
Permanent Dentition
8 incisors, 4 canines, 12 MOLARS (main difference between primary and perm)
Molars are non-succedaneous
3rd molars are highly variable
32 teeth as an adult
Primate Spaces
Spaces between primary teeth. It’s a GOOD thing to have spaces so that there is room for permanent teeth to grow.
Primary Dentition Period
First dentition period. Begins with eruption of the mandibular central incisors. Only primary teeth present. (approx. 6 mos to 6 years)
Mixed Dentition Period
Follows primary period. Both primary and permanent teeth are present. (approx 6 years to 12 years)
Permanent Dentition Period
Final dentition period, follows mixed period. Only permanent teeth present after shedding of last primary tooth. (approx 12 years old, jaw is done growing at this time)
