EOE/IOE Flashcards
Students will be able to identify features of the oral cavity that are covered as part of the IOE. Students will be able to identify features of the head and neck that are covered as part of the EOE. Students will be able to identify findings that are associated with these examinations. Students will be able to describe the two major parts/processes of the EOE/IOE.
EOE
Extra-Oral Exam, lookings for skin lesions, trauma, pathology of skin/eyes/hair (ex. melanoma, jaundice)
IOE
Intra-Oral Exam, looking at lips, cheeks, FOM (floor of mouth), teeth, gums, tonsils, and posterior area of mouth
Visual Inspection
A large part of EOE/IOE, examine the face, skin and overall appearance before moving to oral cavity. Use palpation (touching)
Canine Eminence
Bony ridge of alveolar bone evident facial to canines (especially maxillary) See picture on slide #11
Exostoses
Normal variation in bone, prominent facial ridge of alveolar bone
Torus/Tori
Extra growth of bone at the midline of the hard palate or on the lingual aspect of the mandible (see slide #14 for pictures)
Fossa
Depression (see slide #12)
Eminent
Outstanding (see slide #12)
Retromolar pads
Pad of tissue posterior to the mandibular molars
Maxillary tuberosity
Elevation on the posterior aspect of the maxilla distal to the molars
Pterygomandibular raphe (fold)
Fold of tissure that extends from the soft palate to the retromolar pad NOT BONY (see slide #16 for picture)
Hard Palate
Anterior 2/3
Soft Palate
Posterior 1/3
Uvula
Midline muscular structure that hangs down from the posterior border of the soft palate
Fauces
Opening from the oral region into the oropharynx
