External Oblique
Origin, Insertion, Innervation, Blood Supply
Origin: External surface of the 5th-12th ribs
Insertion: Anterior part of the iliac crest and abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba
Innervation: Thoraco-abdominal nerves (T7-T11) and subcostal nerves (T12)
Blood Supply: Intercostal artery and superior and inferior epigastric arteries
External Oblique Movements
Unilaterally: Ipsilateral side flex vertebral column; ipsilaterally rotate vertebral column contra-laterally
Bilaterally: Flex the vertebral column and compress abdominal contents
Rectus Abdominis
Origin, Insertion, Innervation, Blood Supply
Origin: Pubic crest and pubic symphysis
Insertion: Cartilage of 5th, 6th and 7th ribs and xiphoid process
Innervation: Thoraco-abdominal nerves (anterior rami T6-T12)
Blood Supply: Superior and inferior epigastric arteries
Rectus Abdominis Movements
Flex the vertebral column and tilt the pelvis posteriorly
Internal Oblique
Origin, Insertion, Innervation, Blood Supply
Origin: Lateral inguinal ligament, iliac crest and thoracolumbar fascia
Insertion: Internal surface of lower 3 ribs, abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba
Innervation: Thoraco-abdominal nerves (T6-T12) and first lumbar nerve
Blood Supply: Intercostal arteries and iliolumbar artery
Internal Oblique Movements
Unilaterally: Ipsilateral side flex of vertebral column and rotation of vertebral column
Bilaterally: Flex vertebral column and compress abdominal contents
Transverse Abdominis
Origin, Insertion, Innervation, Blood Supply
Origin: Lateral inguinal ligament, iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia and internal surface of lower 6 ribs
Insertion: Internal surface of the lower 3 ribs, abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba
Innervation: Thoraco-abdominal nerves (T6-T12) and first lumbar nerve
Blood Supply: Intercostal arteries and iliolumbar artery
Transverse Abdominis Movements
Compress abdominal contents
