MP 202.02B Fireground Strategy Flashcards
What are the 2 strategies that structural fireground operations will fall into?
- Offensive
2. Defensive
Risk Management System says what?
- We will risk our lives a lot, in a calculated manner, to save SAVEABLE lives
- We will risk our lives a little, in a calculated manner, to save SAVEABLE property
- We WILL NOT risk our love at all for lives or property that is already LOST
What are some things that the fireground strategy is based on? (5)
- The building (type of construction, conditions, age)
- Structural integrity of the building (contents vs. structural involvement)
- The fire load (what is burning and what’s left to burn)
- The fire and/or smoke conditions (extent, location)
- The rescue profile (risk management profile)
What will the proper strategy be determined by?
- Avoiding simultaneous OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE strategies in same fire area
- Matching the appropriate strategy to the fire conditions of the structure and minimizing risk to firefighters
What are some guidelines for offensive fire attacks? (6)
- Address 2 in / 2 out decision prior to entry
- Initial attack efforts must be directed toward supporting a primary search
- Determine fire conditions and extent before starting fire operations
- Offensive fires should be fought from the INTERIOR-UNBURNED SIDE
- Avoid exterior application of water during offensive operations
- Avoid fire attack from the burning side of the building
When considering unburned portion and where the fire is going, command must consider what? (2)
- the most critical direction and avenues of fire extension
- speed of the fire
Command must structure whatever operations are required to do what?
PUT WATER ON THE FIRE
What are the 7 sides of the fire?
- front
- rear
- side
- other side
- top
- bottom
- interior
Fires cannot be considered under control until what is addressed?
All 7 sides of the fire
What is the only reason to operate in a MARGINAL situation?
Rescue
What must be obtained after any switch from offensive to defensive strategy?
a PAR
What is the 1st and 2nd priority in defensive operations? What would come next?
- Personnel Safety
- Exposure Protection
- To knock down the main body of fire
Define “Fire Under Control”
the forward progress of the fire has been stopped and the remaining fire can be extinguished with the on-scene resources
*Does not mean the fire is completely out
