can be in the form of tangible or intangible rewards
this motivation attracts performers to the sportto begin with, helps cognitive performers

increases participation
why should coaches not place too much emphasis on extrinsic rewards
over use may lead to loss in value or incentive
players may compete for the wrong reasons
puts pressure on performers - could bend the rules for the reward
they can undermine the intrinsic reasons for competing
which type of motivation is better
intrinsice because it is stronger and longer lasting
how can coaches maintain both types of motivation
offering rewards and incentives early on
making the activity fun and enjoyable
point out health benefits
breaking down the skill into parts to allow success

give them praise, so they feel responsible for any success achieved
