attentional control and attentional focus Flashcards
what does easterbrook’s attentional narrowing & cue utilisation hypothisis state
performance is directly related to a performers ability to keep focus on the correct cues in the environment
and this ability to keep focused on the correct cues is linked to arousal
what does easterbrook think will happen with high arousal
performer will only be able to take in several cues
this is called a narrow attention field
this would leade to ATTENTIONAL WASTAGE
what does easterbroook think will happen with low levels of arousal
performer will take in too many cues
causing confusion and info overload
performance would decrease
what does easterbrooks think will happen at moderate levels of arousal
performer filters out the irrelevant cues
lowered stress levels
allows the to perform in the ZOF
what is Nideffers model of attentional focus
to avoid the problem of attentional wastage , Nideffer suggested that a performer could chose an attention style that suited a situation
what are the four attention styles
- broad
- narrow
- external
- internal
what happens with the broad external attention style
picking up a wide range of cues from the environment
used to detect/identify the best options in fast game situations
what happens in the broad internal attention style
mental analysis of numerous cues
information used to analyse performance and plan strategies
what happens in the narrow external attention style
focus is on one cue
from the environment
what is the narrow internal attention style
mental focus on one/two cues
mental rehearsal, imagery or visualisation used
