Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts Flashcards
What are Bryophytes?
Mosses, liverworts, and hornworts
What are the LIFE CYCLES of Bryophytes like?
Involves alternation of generations between a haploid (1n) gametophyte and a (2n) sporophyte
What do Bryophytes need in order for reproduction to occur?
WATER
they also only thrive in wet areas
How tall are most bryophytes?
less than a few CM tall
What are 3 things mosses contain?
- Gametophyte
- Rhizoids
- Sporophyte
What are Gametophyte?
Thin upwright STALK that looks like a stem with tiny leaves (not true stems or leaves)
What are Rhizoids?
Thin branches that GROWS into the GROUND and act like roots to securely anchor the plant (not true roots)
What are Sporophyte?
Brown flag-like structures that top some shoots
What are 3 things Bryophytes lack?
- Lack water conducting tubes found in higher plants
- Lack PROTECTIVE surface covering to keep water from evaporating from their cells
- Lack TRUE ROOTS: rhizoids anchor but don’t absorb and transport efficiently
How do water pass from one cell to the next with Bryophytes?
Passes by OSMOSIS and by means of SURFACE TENSION
works well for SHORT DISTANCES ONLY, thats why bryophytes are not tall*
What are the “leaves” of Bryophytes like?
only ONE CELL THICK
Dry out quickly
How so Bryophytes reproduced?
The SPERM must swim through the WATER to fertilized the EGGS
Uses FLAGELLA to propel themselves
Where MUST bryophytes live?
in WET CONDITIONS
