Ferns and First Vascular Plants Flashcards
Why are members of the phylum Tracheophyta “true” land plants?
Because they have evolved themselves from DEPENDENCE on WET environments
What are two types of VASCULAR TISSUE?
- Xylem
2. Phloem
What do Xylem do?
moves water from roots to all parts of the plant
What do phloem do?
transport nutrients and the products of photosynthesis
What are TRACHEID
cells in xylem that have THICK, STRONG walls that strengthen stems and help plants stand up
What do True Roots have?
VASCULAR TISSUES gathered in a CENTRAL area of the root that is called the VASCULAR CYLINDER
What are True leaves and what are 2 things they contain?
They are PHOTOSYNTHETIC
contain:
- Veins
- Cuticle
What are veins and what do they do?
areas in leaves containing one or more bundles of vascular tissue
What are cuticle and what do they do?
waxy covering that helps prevent water loss by evaporation
What are mosses and horsetails the ONLY living descendants of?
what did they do?
Large and ancient groups of plants
first of these primitive plants appeared more than 400 million years ago
- some grew into huge trees up to 40m tall
- some fossilized into huge beds of COAL
