Demands of LIfe on land Flashcards
What is the FIVE Demands of life on land for plants?
- All CELLS need constant supply of water
- Food making parts of plant must be exposed to AS MUCH SUNLIGHT as possible
- Different tasks MUST be done by diff parts
- ROOTS take up water & nutrients
- LEAVES make food - Water & carbon dioxide must be exchange with the environment
- Reproduction must be possible in environment that lacks water
the cells of land plants need a constant supply of water they do this by…
obtaining water and distributing it to ALL their CELLS
How do land plants protect against water loss?
Protect water loss by EVAPORATION
What do land plants need to be able to exposed their food making parts to the sun as much as possible?
Need RIGID supports to hold up and expose their LEAVES to the sunlight
How do ROOTS take up water and nutrients?
They transport water and nutrients UPWARDS
How do LEAVES make food?
They transport sugars made by PHOTOSYNTHESIS DOWNWARDS
How do land plants exchange carbon dioxide and water?
Exchange carbon dioxide and water without losing too much water in the process
What do land plants need in order for reproduction to happen?
need mechanism to deliver sperm in which sperm doesn’t have to swim through and zygote won’t dry out.
