Lysogenic Infection Flashcards
How does Lysogenic differ from Lytic?
Lysogenic virus does not REPRODUCE and it does not kill its host cell (at least not right away)
What are the 5 stages of the Lysogenic infection?
- Attachment
- Injection
- Integration
- Cell multiplication
- Enters Lytic Cycle (when triggered)
What happens once the viral DNA has entered the host cell?
It remains a part of the host cell for many generations
-called PROPHAGE
What happens during the prophage activity?
- virus can not stay in this stage forever
- DNA of the prophage will become active and remove itself from the DNA of the host cell
- It will then direct the synthesis of new virus particles
Lysogenic can turn into Lytic
What are 2 Factors that can activate the virus from its Prophage stage?
- Sudden changes in temp
2. Availability of nutrients
What are Retroviruses
they contain RNA as their genetic information
What happens when retroviruses infect a host cell?
Produce DNA copy of their RNA genes
RNA –> DNA
works backwards
DNA like prophage, is inserted into the DNA of the host cell
AIDS is caused by what?
Retrovirus called HIV
