hydatidiform mole
type of tumour that grows like a pregnancy inside the uterus
complete mole
2 sperm cells fertilise an ovum that contains no genetic material
sperm combine genetic material and cells divide and grow into tumour - complete mole
no fetal material will form
partial mole
2 sperm cells fertilise a normal ovum at same time
new cell has 3 sets of chromosomes, and cells divide and multiply into a tumour - partial mole
some fetal material may form
features
more severe morning sickness vaginal bleeding inc uterus enlargment abnormally high hCG thyrotoxicosis
USS shows
snowstorm appearance of the pregnancy
confirming diagnosis
provisional diagnosis made by USS
confirmed by histology of mole after evactuation
Mx
uterine evacuation
POC sent for histology
hCG monitored until return to noramal
occasionaly mole can metastasise - systemic chemotherapy
