Module 4-Tissues Flashcards
What is tissues?
Tissues are a group of similar cells hat perfrom a specific function
What are the four main categories of tissues?
Epithelial, connective, nervous and muscular
What does epithelial tissue do?
it is the outer layer of skin in our body and it covers many things including our entire body
Does the epithelial tissue have blood vessels?
no
How is the epithelial tissue classified?
by the shape of the cells
How does the epithelial tissue come in shapes?
Squamous= flat
Cuboidal= cube-shaped
Columnar= cylindral and tall
What is another name for endocrine glands?
ductless glands
What do the endocrine glands do?
They create glands and put it directly to the blood
What do exocrine glands do?
They create sweat, oil, and saliva
Where do exocrine glands put those substances?
They use ducts to send them to specific locations in the body
What does the extracelluar matrix and what does it consists of?
these are what make the connective tissue diverse. It consists of protein fibres and fluid
What is fibrosus connective tissue?
it supports, protects, and holds bones, muscles and other organs in place
Where is firbrous connective tissue found?
in the dermis, tendons and ligaments
what is loose connective tissue?
tissue in the body that helps attach one organ or tissue to another
What are 3 types of loose connective tissue?
areolar- collagen and elastin fibres in soft matrix
- It surrounds blood vessels, nerves, esophagus
Adipose- mostly fat cells
- It protects organs, stores energy and insulates body
Recticular- reticular fires and cells. Found in spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow
What is cartilage and what is it composed of
it is composed of cells called chondrocytes.
-it has no blood vessels and has a rubbery, flexible matrix
What happens when cartilage is damaged?
it heals very slowly and it may not heal at all
What are the different types of cartilage?
hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage
What us Osseous tissue?
the bone
What is the bone composed of?
they are composed of bone cells called osteocytes
What are some functions of the bone?
-serves as a storage site for calcium
- supports the body and protects organs
- it has a rich blood supply which means it heals quickly
What is blood and its functions?
Blood is unique among the connective tissues that exists as a fluid.
- It is composed by various types of blood cells surrounded by a liquid matrix called plasma
- it transports cells from one part of the body to another
- It does not contain any fibres
Why does dense connective tissue take time to heal?
it has few blood supply and it has no vessels
What are the functions of dense connective fibrosus tissue?
Why does cartilage heal slowly?
It heals slowly due to the lack of blood circulation and it has no vessels
What is the nervous tissue and what are the functions?
it is found in the spinal cord, nerves, and brain
- it has a high degree of excitability and conductivity which allows it to communicate rapids with other parts of the body
What are two types of nervous tissue?
Neurons- conduct nervous impulses
Neuroglia- protect and assist neurons
What are the 3 types of membranes?
The mucous membrane, serous membrane, and cutaneous membrane
What does muscular tissue consists of?
it consists of elongated cells to become more active
What are membranes?
they are sheets of tissues
what are three types of muscular tissues?
skeletal, cardiac and smooth
What are the functions of skeletal tissue?
movement, straited, voluntary
What are the functions of Cardiac?
Heart, intercalated dics, involuntary
What are functions of smooth muscle tissue?
organs, digestive tract, lacks sitration and involuntary
What is the mucous membrane and its functions? What are some examples?
Mucous membrane- lines any tube/ structure open to the environment- examples are the mouth stomach, and respiratory tracts
What is the serous membrane and its functions? Give examples-
Serous membrane lines the inside of cavities not open to the environment. Examples- pleura and pericaridium
What is curtaneous membrane?
It is the skin
What is another function of the serous membrane?
it also lines some closed body cavities and covers many organs
