- chemical injury
- heat injury
- topical aspirin
- burns from hot food/liquid
- oral rinses
- dental products (dentures)
- nicotine abuse
- poor hygiene
gingivitis
associated with bacterial overgrowth in people with poor oral hygiene
-> tooth and bone loss
- Assoc. with coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke
herpes simplex s/s
localized pain, tingling, burning with erythema
followed by eruption of vesicles that evolve into painful ulcerative lesions
lesions of HSV clinical manifestations
vesicular with erythematous base
may coalesce and ulcerate before healing
- triggered by: fever, stress, exposure to sun
HPV clinical manifestation
painless, white, verrucous lesions individually or in clusters
- lips
- hard palate
- gingiva
may become ulcerative in response to trauma
candida infection clinical manifestation
white, cottage cheese-like lesions that are easily removed with a swab
- may bleed after manipulation
gingivitis clinical manifestation
- inflammation of the gingiva
- areas of ulceration with our without purulent discharge
bleeding with eating or oral care
apththous ulcers clinical manifestation
painful, shallow ulcerations
burning or pricking of mucosa
gray-yellow, pseudomembranous base surrounded by erythema

- zinc oxide
- zinc suphate
antiviral ointment or oral antiviral
anesthetic creams
hydration
analgesic

HPV management
surgical excision
HPV vaccine (doesnt target oral HPV, but has shown to dec. number)
