What are some of the things HR will keep in mind when evaluating the talent pool?
- What are the abilities, educational levels and experiences of the workers who live in the company’s area?
Demographic data that government agencies collect to determine can be used. Resources that collect data on labor pool - LinkedIn is also helpful.
What factors might have an impact on the talent pool?
Local universities specialize in certain programs which produces graduates well prepared for certain fields. Talent Pool is also affected by generational differences.
Ex) Gen X - different approach to work than Millennials.
Will the talent pool grow if a job search is expanded to another part of the country?
Talent pool in certain geographic area might be relatively small. Organizations sometimes evaluate quality of talent pool in other regions of country
What is Succession Planning?
Creating a plan to replace people who fill critical roles, have rare skills, and perform essential duties
What are the 4 steps to Succession Plan?
- Conduct needs assessment by identifying skill sets of company’s executives and critical employees, and determine which employees are well-suited for grooming.
- Identify roles for which choosing a successor is essential
- Meet with relevant employees and managers and review past performance, competencies, areas for improvement and career goals.
- Draft and refine development, training, and formal education plans for these employees, and create an implementation schedule with a series of milestones.
What is Forecasting?
Using research to understand trends in areas such as sales, growth, and the market; analyze their findings to make predictions, and make decisions.
What is Outsourcing?
Occurs when entire project is handled by outside vendor. This approach is followed when a project is large, well-defined or both.
Ex) Commonly outsourced work includes: legal services, technical projects, and facilities services.
What are Independent Contractors?
A person or entity contracted to do work or provide services as a non-employee who responsible for their own SS and Medicare taxes.
Non-employees hired for a specific job at a specific rate of pay. Work is off-site and responsible for paying their taxes.
Ex) Writers and web designers.
What is Temporary Employment?
Used for a specific project and time-limited and workers don’t receive benefits.
Reasons to use this: surge in workload (seasonal workers) or full-time employee taking leave for health or personal reasons and coverage is needed for specific time period.
What are Temporary Workers?
Workers hired directly or through an agency with expectation their employment is not permanent; aka season or term of project workers
What is an Internship?
Used to assist on a project where specific support is needed. A great way to source talent from education resources on trial basis for potential of employment in the future.
Interns are often not paid employees and do not receive benefits but do receive critical experience to assist in career planning.
