Explain each of the following terms:
- threatened miscarriage
- inevitable miscarriage
- incomplete miscarriage
- complete miscarriage
Threatened miscarriage - risk to pregnancy
Inevitable miscarriage - pregnancy can’t be saved
Incomplete miscarriage - part of pregnancy is lost already
Complete miscarriage - all of pregnancy lost, uterus is empty
How many pregnancies means recurrent miscarriage?
What condition is associated with this?

Why do miscarriages happen?
Normally unknown - most commonly embryo not genetically correct
What is the more significant symptom. Bleeding or cramping?
Bleeding
How is it investigated?
US - assess if embryo still in utero
Speculum - patency of cervical os and if any material in vagina/coming from cervix
If cervical os is closed on speculum invx. What does this suggest?
Threatened miscarriage - risk to pregnancy
What is the difference between missed and threatened miscarriage?
Both have an episode of bleeding
Missed - foetal heart beat is gone and SGA
Threatened not affected pregnancy - baby still developing and with a heart beat
