lasts 4-72h may be: unilateral pulsing debilitating pain worsened by movement N/V photophobia phonophobia aura w/fortification pattern

A
vasodilation increases along w/inflammation of the brain’s vasculature; increase in blood flow increases pressure in skull

types of migraine meds
A
abortive: stop migraine after initiation (non specific analgesia, migraine specific)
prophylactic: preventative (TCAs, beta blockers, antiepileptic)

triptan mechanism of action
A
stop migraines by activating 5HT receptors to cause vasoconstriction and decrease inflammation

issues w/triptans
A
chest pressure/heavy arms (also associated w/MI); contraindicated for pt w/hx CV dz
drug interactions:
ergot alkaloids (migraine meds)
antidepressants (5HT syndrome)
