What is the most common type of healthcare associated infection ?
Hospital acquired pneumonia.
Which organism is most associated with urinary catheter associated UTIs ?
E.Coli
Which organism is most associated with ventilator associated pneumonia ?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
What are HAIs?
Onset of infection >48hrs after hospital admission
Often difficult to treat; resistance is common
Aetiology of HAIs?
Aetiology: lots of pathogens, antibiotics, devices (lines, catheters), wounds
HAI -> pneumonia organisms?
S. aureus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Haemophilus
What does C. diff cause? Aetiology? + Rx?
Pseudomembranous colitis
Caused by Abx disturbing normal gut flora – 3Cs (clindamycin, cephalosporins, ciprofloxacin)
Rx: 1st line: metronidazole; 2nd line: vancomycin
What are some HAIs -> UTI?
E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas
What are some HAIs -> bacteraemia?
MRSA, CoNS, E. coli
