What is a hospital acquired infection?
Onset of infection >48h after hospital admission
What may cause HAI?
Lots of pathogens
Antibiotics
Devices (lines, catheters)
Wounds
*Common pathogens of HAI - pneumonia?
*Staph aureus
Klebsiella
Pseudomonas
Haemophilus
What pathogen is responsible for infection after course of antibiotics?
Clostridium difficile
What can clostridium difficile cause?
Pseudomembranous colitis
Which Abx commonly cause pseudomembranous colitis?
3 Cs disturb normal gut flora
- Clindamycin
- Cephalosporins
- Ciprofloxacin
Management for pseudomembranous colitis
1st line: Metronidazole
2nd line: Vancomycin
Most common causes for HAI UTI?
E. Coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas
Most common causes for HAI bacteraemia?
MRSA, CoNS (coagulase negative staphylococcus), E.coli
