Microbio Chapter 2- Chemical Principles Flashcards
What are proteins?
Organic molecules containing C,H,O,N and S
What the subunits of proteins called?
Amino Acids
What do amino acids consist of?
An amino group
Side R group
Carboxyl group
What are peptide bonds?
Amino acids bond between the carbon atom of the carboxyl group of one AA and the nitrogen group of another AA
How are peptide bonds formed?
Dehydration synthesis
What is dehydration synthesis?
For every peptide bond formed, one water molecule is released.
What are the four levels of organization?
primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary
What is Primary structure?
Amino acids form a polypeptide chain.
What is Secondary structure?
Twisting/folding of the polypeptide chain
Two types
What are the two types of secondary structures?
helix and pleated sheet
What is tertiary structure?
helix and pleated sheets fold to form a three-dimensional structure of a polypeptide chain
What is quarternary structure?
2 or more folded chains
Protein is formed
What is denaturation?
protein encounters a hostile environment –>
Strand unravels and loses shapes
What are nucleic acids?
Organic substance constisting of nucleotides
What are nucleotides?
Ribose sugar
Phosphate group
Nitrogen-base
