Microbial Growth Deck (Practical) Flashcards
Name the 5 I’s employed by microbiologists.
1) Inoculation
2) Isolation
3) Incubation
4) Inspection
5) Identification
Placing a specimen onto an artificial culture medium
What is inoculation?
Spatially separating microbial growth form distinct CFUs
What is isolation?
Placing the culture medium in a particular environment to promote growth
What is incubation?
Examining culture for the presence of microbial growth
What is inspection?
Performing specific tests to ID any pathogenic microbes isolated
What is identification?
Media containing nutrients in unknown quantities that are added to bring about a particular characteristic of a microbial strain
What is complex media?
General purpose media that supports the growth of most non-fastidious organisms
What is non-selective media?
Media that enhances the growth of certain (fastidious) bacteria and inhibits the growth of others
What is selective media?
Media that allows dissimilar bacteria to be distinguished from each other based on physical appearance or colony morphology
What is differential media?
Growth medium suitable for the culture of microbes or animal cells (including human) of which all of the chemical components are known
What is chemically-defined media?
