Methylprednisolone Class?
Corticosteroid, Glucocorticoid
Methylprednisolone Action?
Synthetic steroid that suppresses acute and chronic inflammation. It also potentiates vascular smooth muscle relaxation by beta-adrenergic agonists and may alter airway hyperactivity.
Methylprednisolone Indications?
Anaphylaxis, asthma unresponsive to bronchodilators, adrenal insufficiency
Methylprednisolone Contraindications?
Caution in pt’s with GI bleeding, diabetes, severe infection
Methylprednisolone Onset/Duration?
Onset: 1-2 hrs
Duration: 8-24 hours
Methylprednisolone Dose/Route?
Adult: 125 mg IV
Peds: 1-2 mg/kg IV
Methylprednisolone Side Effects?
hypertension, hypokalemia, headache, alkalosis, sodium and water retention
Methylprednisolone Note*
Use in spinal injury and shock is controversial
