Ibuprofen Class?
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory (NSAID)
Ibuprofen Action?
Slows prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, thereby decreasing inflammation.
Ibuprofen Indications?
Pain, fever, various inflammatory disorders.
Ibuprofen Contraindications?
Hypersensitivity, bleeding disorders, renal failure or disease, active peptic ulcer disease, preterm infants with infection, congenital heart disease from patent ductus arteriosis.
Ibuprofen Onset/Duration?
Onset: 30-60 min
Duration: 6-8 hrs
Ibuprofen Dose/Route?
Adult: 400-800 mg PO, every 6-8 hrs
Peds: 10 mg/kg PO, up to 400 mg every 4-6 hrs
Ibuprofen Side Effects?
Bleeding disorders, nausea, headache, rash, edema.
Ibuprofen Note*
May antagonize effects of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, beta blockers, angiotensin-receptor antagonist medications, salicylates, and certain classes of diuretic medications.
