Memory Flashcards
Name the 3 levels of memory.
Sensory, short term and long term
What is encoding?
Selecting information to be committed to memory and converting it to a form we can store
What is the memory capacity of the short term memory?
7 items (+-2) and 30 secs
What term is used to describe repeating information so it is held for a longer period of time in the short term memory?
Rehearsal
What is chunking?
Putting information into meaningful units.
Explain the recency effect.
The information from the end is still in the STM
Explain the primacy effect.
The information from the start has moved into the LTM (rehearsal)
State 3 ways of moving information from the STM to the LTM.
Elaboration, organisation, rehearsal
What is the capacity of the LTM?
Unlimited
What is the dialing code for Rochdale?
01706
What term is used to describe the conversion of a nerve impulse into a form that can be received and held by the brain?
Encoding
Which revision technique can lead to shallow encoding?
rehearsal
Which type of encoding leads to greater retention of information?
deep encoding
What is one way of increasing the capacity of the STM?
Chunking
What do we call the external environment (sights, smells) present when information is initially encoded?
Contextual Cues
What name is given to the ability of the STM to process data (as well as store it)?
Working memory
What is the definition of elaboration?
Addition of further information or meaning which results in the information being more meaningful and interesting to easier to transfer to LTM
What is the definition of organisation?
Putting the information that is to be transferred into logical categories which makes it easier to transfer to LTM
What is the definition of rehearsal?
Going over information repeatedly
What is displacement in the STM?
older information is pushed out by new information
State 3 things memories include.
Past experience, knowledge and thoughts.
What is the capacity of the sensory memory?
It retains all visual and auditory input for a few seconds.
What causes the loss of memory by decay?
Passage of time between learning and trying to retrieve the information.
