Memory Flashcards
What are three memory processes?
encoding- into the memory
storage- holding in memory
retrieval- finding in memory
What is sensory memory?
A very large capacity, short duration, ms for icon, sec for echos-
What is short term memory?
20 second duration; limited capacity
What is long term memory?
huge capacity, long duration, encoded by weaning?
What is the Atkinson- Sheffron model?
sensory memory -> short term memory -> long term memory and vice versa for retrieval long term -> short term
What is LTM studying?
Recall practice or testing improves memory every time we do it. Speed or distribution practice is more effective than amassed study. Tie things to thing that you already know as much as possible,
What is context dependent memory?
Memory is better when we’re in the original learning context
What is state dependence memory?
same physical and emotional state. In one emotion, you can remember other times in that emotion.
What is flashbulb memory?
Vivid, detailed memory, tied to shocking, unexpected memory. certain of details not as accurate. Deteriorates 20% or more within the first year.
What are the two components of explicit memory?
episodic: experiences, events, and times
somatic: fact, info, and data
What is procedural memory?
along repetition priming, forms of implicit memory
involving motor learning and skill, hardly fades with age.
What is transience?
memory decreases over time
What are the seven sins of memory?
transience, absentmindedness, blocking, mis- attribution, suggestibility, persistance
