anatomy of the brain Flashcards
What makes up the hindbrain?
medulla, pons, and cerebellum.
What is the forebrain made up of?
cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, corpus collosum, pituitary gland
What does the medulla control?
breathing, heart rate, monitors CO2 levels in the blood.
What do the pons control?
Arousal level, dreaming, relay statuses to cerebellum.
What does cerebellum control?
Muscle coordination, balance
What does the reticular formation control?
Sleeping and awaking
What is the thalamus?
critical relay station for upper brain, connects the forebrain to the rest of the brain.
What is the hypothalamus in charge of?
Homeostasis, hunger, thirst and sex drive.
What is the corpus collosum?
connects the right and the left brain.
What is the pituitary gland in charge of?
Master of the endocrine gland (hormones)
What i the limbic system?
Learning and memory, emotions.
What is the amygdala?
controls emotional expression
What is the hippocampus?
stores declarative memories (experiences)
Cingulate gyrus?
coordinates sensory input and emotion
temporal lobe?
the auditorial cortex, memories of sound, language understanding
