Membrane potentials Flashcards
1
Q
What is the average RMP?
A
-70mV
2
Q
How is RMP maintained?
A
-Pumps and transporters (Na/K ATPase)
- Channels (ligand gated, voltage gated)
- GPCRs
3
Q
Why is the Na/K ATPase so important?
A
- membrane very permeable to K so K leaks out
- this ATPase allows two K in in exchange for three Na out ( therefore more negative inside)
- key for maintenance of RMP
4
Q
During depolarization, which channels are open?
A
- Na Channels, allowing Na into the cell
5
Q
During repolarization, which channels open and close?
A
- Na channels close, so no more Na enters cell
- K+ channels open, allowing K to leave cell to become more negative
