Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What does the ANS do?
A
- controls involuntary responses
- controls the internal (visceral) organs of the body
- primary role is to maintain homeostasis
2
Q
What are the three divisions of the ANS?
A
- PNS - “rest and digest”
- SNS - “fight or flight”
- ENS - the gut
3
Q
What part of the brain determines whether PNS or SNS activation is needed?
A
- hypothalamus
4
Q
Three pathways of efferent neurons
A
- parasympathetic pathway
- sympathetic pathway
- adrenal sympathetic pathway
5
Q
What does SNS activation do?
A
- activates SNS neuron to adrenal gland, causing release of epinephrine and norepinephrine
6
Q
PNS neurotransmitter
A
Acetylcholine
