The surgical loosening of an ankylosed joint (arthr/o means joint, and -lysis means loosening or setting free) Note: suffix -lysis also means breaking down or destruction and may indicate either a pathologic state or therapeutic procedure.

A minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of the interior of a joint. Ex: torn cartilage can be removed with the use of an arthroscope and instruments inserted through small incisions.
