Congenital Disorders Flashcards
What is a congenital disorder?
A congenital disorder is an abnormal condition that exists at the time of birth
What does the term congenital mean?
Congenital means existing at birth. These conditions can be caused by a developmental disorder before birth, prenatal influences, premature birth, or injuries during the birth process.
What is a developmental disorder?
A developmental disorder, also known as a birth defect, can result in an anomaly or malformation, such as the absence of a limb, or the presence of an extra toe.
What does anomaly mean?
An anomaly is a deviation from what is regarded as normal.
What does the term atresia mean?
The term atresia describes the congenital absence of a normal body opening or the failure of a structure to be tubular.
Ex: what is anal atresia?
Anal atresia is the congenital absence of the opening at the bottom end of the anus
Ex: what is pulmonary atresia?
Pulmonary atresia is the absence of a pulmonary valve
What is a prenatal influence?
Prenatal influences are the mother’s health, her behavior, and the prenatal medical care she does, or does not receive before delivery.
What is an example of a problem with the mother‘s health?
An example of a problem with the mothers health is a rubella infection. Birth defects often develop if a pregnant woman contracts this viral infection early in her pregnancy.
What is an example of a problem caused by the mothers behavior?
An example of a problem caused by the mothers behavior is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which is caused by the mothers consumption of alcohol during the pregnancy.
The resulting condition of the baby is characterized by physical and behavioral traits, including growth abnormalities, mental retardation, brain damage, and socialization difficulties.
What are examples of problems caused by lack of adequate prenatal medical care?
Premature delivery or a low birthweight baby.
What is premature birth?
Premature birth, which is a birth that occurs earlier than 37 weeks of development, can cause serious health problems because the babies body systems have not had time to form completely. Breathing difficulties and heart problems are common in premature babies.
Birth injuries are congenital disorders that were not present before the events surrounding the time of birth. For example, cerebral palsy, which is the result of _________.
Brain damage, can be caused by premature birth or inadequate oxygen to the brain during birth process.
The study of the medical problems and care of older people is known as _________ or _________
Geriatrics or gerontology
Postmortem means _________. A postmortem examination is also known as an ______.
After death. Autopsy.
