Joints Flashcards
Joints, what you’re also known as _______
Articulations, are the place of union between two or more bones.
What are fibrous joints?
Fiber joints, consist of inflexible layers of dense, connective tissue, hold the bones tightly together
And adults, fibrous joints are also known as ______
Structures, which do not allow any movement
Fontanelles are also known as
Soft spots, are normally presence on the school of a newborn.
What are cartilaginous joints?
Cartilaginous joints, allow only slight movement and consist of bones connected entirely by cartilage
Ex: when the ribs connect the sternum, these joints, allow movement during breathing
Ex: the pubic symphysis allows some movements of facilitate childbirth. This joint is located between the pubic bones in the anterior of the pelvis.
What is a synovial joint?
Synovial joint is created where two bones articulate to permit a variety of motions.
What does the term articulate mean?
Articulate means to come together. These joints are also described based on their type of motion: ball and socket joints and hinge joints
Ball and socket joints
Suggest the hips and shoulders, allow a wide range of motion in many directions
Hinge joints
Such as the knees and elbows are synovial joints, that allow movement primarily in one direction or plane
What is the synovial capsule?
The synovial capsule is the outermost layer of strong, fibrous tissue that resembles a sleeve as it surrounds the joint
What is the synovial membrane?
The synovial membrane, lines the capsule and secretes synovial fluid
What is synovial fluid?
Synovial fluid, which flows within the synovial cavity, acts as a lubricant to make the smooth movement of the joint possible.
What are ligaments
Ligaments are bands of fibrous tissue that form joints by connecting one bone to another bone or by joining a bone to cartilage.
What is a bursa
A bursa is a fibrous sack that acts as a cushion to ease movement in areas that are subject, friction, such as in the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints, or a tendon passes over a bone. (Plural, bursae)
