Median nerve Flashcards
What does the median nerve do after leaving the axilla?
Descends down arm
How does the median nerve descend down the arm?
Initially laterally to the brachial artery
About halfway down arm, becomes medial to brachial artery
What does the median nerve do at the end of the arm?
Enters the cubital fossa
What does the median nerve do at the end of the cubital fossa?
Enters the anterior forearm
between the two heads of pronator teres
What does the median nerve do in the anterior forearm?
Travels between FDP and FDS
Gives off branches
What branches does the median nerve give off in the anterior forearm?
Anterior interosseus branch
Palmar cutaneous nerve
What does the median nerve do at the end of the forearm?
Enters the carpal tunnel
What does the median nerve do in the carpal tunnel?
Divides into two branches
What branches does the median nerve divide into in the carpal tunnel?
Recurrent branch
Palmar digital branch
What are the motor functions of the median nerve?
Median nerve supplies
- pronator teres
- flexor carpi radialis
- palmaris longus
-FDS
Anterior interosseus branch supplies
- FDP lateral half!
- flexor pollicis longus
- pronator teres
Recurrent branch supplies
- flexor pollicis brevis
- abductor pollicis brevis
- opponens pollicis
Palmar digital branches supply
-lateral two lumbricals
What are the sensory functions of the median nerve?
Gives off palmar cutaneous branch
-supplies lateral palm, including palmar surface of thumb
beneath lateral 3.5 fingers
Palmar digital branches
- supply palmar surace of lateral 3.5 fingers
- and dorsal surface of lateral 3.5 fingers up to DIP
