Medial and Posterior Thigh Flashcards
What muscles makes up the medial thigh?
adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus, gracilis, obturator externus
Where do the adductor muscles insert?
linea aspera of the femur
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the adductor longus ?
Origin: body of pubis
Insertion: middle third of linea aspera
Innervation: obturator nerve
action: adducts thigh
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the adductor brevis?
Origin: body and inferior ramus of the pubis
Insertion: pectineal line
Innervation: obturator nerve
action:adducts thigh and to some extent flexes it
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the adductor magnus?
Origin:adductor part-inferior ramus of pubis
hamstring part- ischial tuberosity
Insertion:adductor-gluteal tuberosity
hamstring- adductor tubercle of femur
Innervation:adductor-obturator nerve
hamstring- tibial part of sciatic nerve
action: adducts thigh, also flexes, and hamstirng part extends thigh
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the gracilis ?
Origin: body and inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion: superior part of medial surface of tibia
Innervation: obturator nerve
action:adducts thigh, flexes leg, rotates leg medially
What are the two parts of the adductor magnus?
adductor (adducts and flexes thigh, obturator nerve) and hamstring parts (extends , sciatic)
What is the opening of the adductor canal?
the apex of the femoral triangle
What enters the adductor canal?
Femoral artery, vein, saphenous nerve, and nerve to vastus mediallis
what is the adductor canal?
a fibrous tunnel that prevents the femoral vessels from getting squeeze closed by the contraction of the large thigh muscles
where do the femoral artery and vein exit the adductor canal?
Adductor hiatus and then continue as the popliteal artery and vein behind the knee
what is the largest nerve in the posterior thigh?
sciatic nerve
What are the branches of the sciatic nerve?
Tibial nerve and common fibular nerve
What makes up the hamstring muscles?
Semitendinosus, semimembranosus, biceps femoris
What is the main actions of the hamstring?
Flexion of the knee and extension of the hip.
What is sciatica?
Pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg.
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the Semitendinosus?
origin:ischial tuberosity
Insertion: superior part of the medial surface of tibia
Innervation:tibial division of sciatic nerve
action: extend hip joint , flex knee and medially rotate it when flexed
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the Semimembranous?
origin:ischial tuberosity
Insertion: posterior part of medial condyle of tibia
Innervation: tibial division of sciatic nerve
action:extend hip joint , flex knee and medially rotate it when flexed
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the Biceps femoris?
origin: Long head- ischial tuberosity
short head - linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line
Insertion:lateral side of head of fibula
Innervation:long head- tibial division of sciatic nerve
short head-common fibular division of sciatic nerve
action: flexes knee joint and laterally rotates it when flexed , long head extends hip joint
