Anterior Leg Flashcards
What region is behind the knee?
popliteal fossa
Where does the TIbial Nerve enter the leg?
posterior compartment of the leg
What passes through the popliteal fossa?
Popliteal artery, popliteal vein, tibial nerve, common fibular nerve
Common fibular nerve
passes laterally around the neck of the fibula, divides into the superficial fibular nerve ( biggest in the body?) and deep fibular nerve
What does the superficial fibular nerve supply?
the lateral compartment of the leg
What does the deep fibular nerve supply?
anterior compartment of the leg
What is the deep fascia of the leg called?
Crural fascia, which attatches to the tibia to divide the leg into compartments
What are the muscles of the anterior leg ?
Tibialis anterior, Extensor digitorum longus, Extensor hallucis longus, Fibularis (peroneus) tertius
What are the muscles of the lateral leg?
Fibularis longus and fibularis brevis
What may stretch the tendons of the lateral leg?
strong inversion of the foot
Which tendon is known for its strength?
tendon of fibularis brevis
What may cause foot drop ?
Damage to the common fibular nerve, this nerve is at risk when the proximal fibula is fractured
What is foot drop?
Inability to dorsiflex the foot and extend toes, resulting in dragging the toes and foot when walking. Compensation with a high stepping gait
What is compartment syndrome?
Condition where increased pressure within a muscle compartment can lead to nerve and muscle damage. The crural fascia is very strong . fasciotomy may be required
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the tibialis anterior ?
origin: lateral condyle and superior half of lateral surface of tibia
Insertion: medial and inferior surface of medial cuneiform and base of 1st metatarsal
Innervation:deep fibular nerve
action:dorsiflexes ankle, inverts foot, supports arch
