Gluteal Region Flashcards
What are the gluteal muscles?
Muscles in the buttocks, including the gluteus maximus, Medius, and minimus.
Where are intramuscular muscular injections done?
into gluteus maximus in the upper right quadrant of the muscle, this avoids contact of the needle with the sciatic nerve
What happens in a open chain movement, foot free to move ?
gluteus medius and minimus will abduct the thigh
What happens in a closed chain movement, foot planted?
gluteus medius and minimus will contract to keep the pelvis level
What is Trendelenburg Sign?
When standing on one leg, the pelvis drops on the unsupported side, indicating weakness in the gluteus medius muscle. Caused by injury to the gluteus medius and or minimus. Damage to the superior gluteal nerve
Trendelenburg gait
requires more muscle activity for walking, which makes walking much more tiring
What are the lateral rotators of the thigh?
Piriformis, Gemellus superior, Obturator internus, Gemellus inferior, Quadratus femoris, obturator externus
Where do the lateral rotators of the thigh insert?
Greater trochanter of the femur
What is piriformis syndrome ?
Condition where the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and along the path of the nerve.
What is the origin, insertion, innervation and action of the gluteus maximus ?
origin: ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line, dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx
Insertion: IT band
Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve
action: Extend thigh and assist in lateral rotation
What is the origin, insertion, innervation and action of the gluteus medius ?
origin: external surface of ilium. between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Insertion:lateral surface of greater trochanter
Innervation: superior gluteal nerve
action:abduct and medially rotate the thigh
What is the origin, insertion, innervation and action of the gluteus minimus ?
origin: external surface of ilium. between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Insertion: anterior surface of greater trochanter
Innervation: superior gluteal nerve
action:abduct and medially rotate the thigh
What is the origin, insertion, innervation and action of the Piriformis ?
origin:Anterior surface of sacrum
Insertion:superior border of greater trochanter
Innervation:branches of anterior rami
action: laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh
What is the origin, insertion, innervation and action of the gemelli superior?
origin: ischial spine
Insertion:medial surface of greater trochanter
Innervation: nerve to obturator internus
action:laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh
What is the origin, insertion, innervation and action of the quadratus femoris ?
origin: lateral border of ischial tuberosity
Insertion:quadrate tubercle of intertrochanter crest of femur
Innervation: nerve to quadratis femoris
action: laterally rotate thigh
