A

An area which, under IMO requirements, require special mandatory conditions for the prevention of pollution at sea

Provided with a higher level of protection than other areas.

A

The ship is proceeding on a voyage

More than 12 miles from land

Fitted with an OWS

Oil content of the effluent discharged does not exceed 15ppm

INSIDE A SPECIAL AREA:

As above as long as the OWS has an automatic shut off if the effluent discharged exceeds 15ppm

All discharges must be recorded in the ORB

Certificates to be carried under Annex V

A

IMO MEPC 220 (63) states that:

Every ship of 100 GT and above, and every ship to carry 15 or more pax, shall carry a:
Garbage Management Plan

Every ship of 400 GT and above, and every ship to carry more than 15 Pax engaged in voyages to ports or offshore terminals, shall be provided with a Garbage Record Book

Every ship of 12m or more in LOA shall display placards which notify the Crew and Passengers of the ships Disposal Requirements

A

A Unique Maritime Environment that may be vulnerable to damage from International Maritime Activities

Not mutually exclusive criteria to Special Areas, Can be found within one another

Ensure scuppers are plugged

A

Written set of procedures for everyone on board to follow, that outlines the requirements for the storing, handling, segregating and discharge of garbage on board.

Will contain procedures for:
Incinerators/compactors
Accidental discharge procedures
Any specific training on board

A

Establish location of ECA on chart

Take on Low Sulphur Diesel before passage

Establish a fuel-change-over point on chart as discussed with Engineers to ensure we are burning Low Sulphur Diesel by the time we enter the ECA (assuming we are carrying high Sulphur fuel)
