Rule 20 Application
a) all weathers
b) sunrise to sunset
no other lights, except those that cannot be confused or impair/ interfere with lookout
c) Lights prescribed in this part, If carried, shall be exhibited in restricted vis as well as all other necessary circumstances
d) rules concerning shapes, by day
e) Lights specified shall comply with the provisions of Annex I
Rule 21 Definitions, a)
White Masthead light- fore and aft centreline. Unbroken
arc of horizon of 225 degrees (right ahead- 22.5 degrees abaft the beam) either side
Sidelight b)
Green STBD light, Red Port light
Unbroken arc over the horizon of 112.5 degrees, from right ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam, on their respective side
< 20m, can have combined in one lantern, fore and aft centreline
Sternlight c)
White light, as nearly as practicable at the stern
Unbroken arc over the horizon of 135 degrees
From dead astern, to 67.5 degrees on each side
Towing light d)
Yellow light, same characteristics as a sternlight for each vessel
All-round light e)
light showing unbroken arc over the horizon of 360 degrees
Flashing light f)
light flashing at regular intervals of 120 flashes or more per minute
Rule 22 visibility of lights
>50m
Intensity as specified in section 8 of Annex I: to be seen from ranges of:
>50m
Masthead: 6 miles
Sidelight: 3 miles
Sternlight: 3 miles
Towing light: 3 miles
All round light (WRGY): 3 miles

12m or more but less than 50m
Masthead: 5 miles, except <20m, then 3 miles
Sidelight: 2 miles
Sternlight: 2 miles

When length of tow exceeds 200m, 3 such lights

When the length of tow exceeds 200m, a diamond shape where best be seen
Rule 24 towing and pushing
Pushing vessel/vessel being pushed ahead, rigidly connected in a composite unit
Shall be regarded as ONE PDV and shall exhibit such lights as Rule 23

PDV pushing ahead or towing alongside, NOT as a composite unit
