Rule 11

Sailing Vessels
a) When two sailing vessels approaching so as to involve ROC, one shall keep out of the way of the other:
i- port side tack shall keep out of the way
ii- windward shall Keep out of the way
iii- on port tack, unsure of vessel to windwards tack, shall Keep out of the way
b) Windward side considered opposite side to mainsail
In a square rigged, side opposite to which the largest fore-and-aft sail is carried
Rule 13 a-d

Overtaking
a) Not withstanding Any OTHER RULE in section B, Sections I & II,
Any vessel overtaking shall keep out of the way
b) More than 22.5 abaft the beam (stern light)
c) When in doubt, overtaking exists (sternlight AND sidelights = doubt)
d) Any subsequent alteration of the bearing between the two vessels, shall not make the overtaking vessel a crossing vessel, does not relieve her of her obligation to keep out of the way
Rule 14 a-c
Head on situation TWO PDVs
a) Alter to stbd to avoid
b) Deemed to exist when on reciprocal, masthead lights in line and both sidelights
c) Any doubt, Head on exists
Rule 15
Crossing situation
Two PDV’s crossing so as to involve a risk of collision
The vessel which has the other on her own stbd shall keep out of the way and avoid crossing ahead (if circumstances admit)
Rule 16
Action by give way vessel
Take early and substantial action to keep clear.
(Will avoid ‘embarrasing’ the other)
Rule 17 a-d
Action by stand on
SHALL, MAY, SHALL
a) i- SHALL hold course and speed
ii- MAY take action by manoeuvre alone, as soon as it is apparent
b) When from any cause, is too close to other: SHALL take such action as will best aid to avoid collision
c) A stand on vessel, in accordance with A(ii) of this rule, Shall not turn to port, for a vessel on her port side (if case admits)
d) This rule does not relieve the give-way vessel of her obligation to keep out of the way
Rule 18 (a-f)
Responsibilities between vessels
Except where Rules 9,10,13 otherwise require:
a) PDV shall keep out of the way of:
RAM
NUC
EIF
SV
b) SV shall keep out of the way of:
NUC
RAM
EIF
c) EIF shall, so far as possibke, keep out of the way of:
NUC
RAM
d) Everyone except RAM and NUC gives way to a CBD, exhibiting signals in Rule 28
CBD will have full regard to her condition
e) Sea Plane will avoid impeding passage of other vessels, however where ROC exists she shall take action in accordance with the rules of this part
f) WIG craft when operating in flight, taking off or landing, will keep well clear of all other vessels and avoid impeding
WIG craft operating on the water are considered PDV’s
