Anatomy of the mandible
Mandible
Mandible = the ___ and ___ bone of the face
Ramus = meets the ___ at an ___
Body = ___ part joined at ___ - joined at ___ year of life)
Mental Foramen = ___ of face go through
Angle = also called the ___
Alveolar Portion = basis for ___ - supports ___ of ___
Mental Protuberance = mental point ___ - ___ part of the ___/___
Condylar Process = has a ___
Mandible
Mandible = the largest and densest bone of the face
Ramus = meets the body at an angle
Body = curved part joined at symphysis - joined at first year of life)
Mental Foramen = nerves of face go through
Angle = also called the gonion
Alveolar Portion = basis for teeth - supports root of teeth
Condylar Process = has a neck
Mental Protuberance = mental point anterior - point part of the chin/mandible

What are the routine projections, SID, and kVp of the mandible?
Routine projection = AP Axial (Towne Method), PA, Axiolateral Obliques left and right (and panorex if available)
SID = 40”
kVp = 80 grid
Mandible - AP Axial Towne Method
Position the patient as if for a skull, in the ___ or ___ position.
Adjust the patient’s head so that the midsagittal plane is ___ to the IR.
Flex the neck enough to place the ___ ___ to the IR.
Direct the CR through the ___ ___ at a ___ angle of ___° to the ___ or ___° to the ___ so the CR enters approximately ____ inches above the ___.
Collimate down to the height of the ___ ___.
This projection will demonstrate the….
Mandible - AP Axial Towne Method
Position the patient as if for a skull, in the upright or supine position.
Adjust the patient’s head so that the midsagittal plane is perpendicular to the IR.
Flex the neck enough to place the OML perpendicular to the IR.
Direct the CR through the foramen magnum at a caudal angle of 30° to the OML or 37° to the IOML so the CR enters approximately 2.5 inches above the glabella.
Collimate down to the height of the mandibular condyles.
This projection will demonstrate the mandibular condyles
Mandible - PA
Place the patient in the ___ position.
Instruct the patient to rest ___ and ___ on the table and adjust the head so the ___ and midsagittal plane are ___ to exit the ___.
This projection will demonstrate the ___ of the ___.
Mandible - PA
Place the patient in the prone position.
Instruct the patient to rest nose and forehead on the table and adjust the head so the OML and midsagittal plane are perpendicular to exit the acanthion.
This projection will demonstrate the body of the mandible.
Mandible - Axiolateral Obliques Right and Left
The patient is ___ or ___, with the head in a ___ ___ position. Adjust the rotation of the head until the ___ of the ___ is ___ to the IR, approximately ___° towards the IR.
Direct the CR ___-___° ___ through the ___ ___ that is up. Both left and right ___ projections must be completed for ___.
This projection will demonstrate part of the ___, ___, and ___ of the mandible. Side ___ is side demonstrated.
Mandible - Axiolateral Obliques Right and Left
The patient is upright or prone, with the head in a true lateral position. Adjust the rotation of the head until the body of the mandible is parallel to the IR, approximately 30° towards the IR.
Direct the CR 15-25° cephalad through the mandibular angle that is up. Both left and right oblique projections must be completed for comparison.
This projection will demonstrate part of the ramus, angle, and body of the mandible. Side down is side demonstrated.

What are the routine projections, SID, and kVp of temporomandibular joints?
Routine projection = AP Axial (Towne Method), Open and Closed Mouth Axiolateral
SID = 40”
kVp = 80 grid
TMJ - AP Axial Towne Method
The patient is in an ___ or ___ position.
The head is positioned so the ___ and the midsagittal plane are ___ to the plane of the IR.
Direct the CR with a ___° ___ angle to exit the ___ ___.
Cone down to the ___.
This projection demonstrates the ___ ___ and the ___ ___.
TMJ - AP Axial Towne Method
The patient is in an upright or or supine position.
The head is positioned so the OML and the midsagittal plane are perpendicular to the plane of the IR.
Direct the CR with a 30° caudal angle to exit the foramen magnum.
Cone down to the condyles.
This projection demonstrates the mandibular condyles and the mandibular fossae.
TMJ - Closed Mouth Axiolateral (2 - 1 of each side)
Place the patient in a ___ ___ position, either ___ or ___.
Position the head in a ___ position so the ___ line is ___ to the film and the ___ plane is ___ to the plane of the film.
Direct the CR with a ___° ___ angle to a point ___” ___ and ___” ___ to the ___ that is up.
Both the ___ and ___ laterals must be completed. Side ___ is side demonstrated.
TMJ - Closed Mouth Axiolateral (2 - 1 of each side)
Place the patient in a modified swimmer’s position, either recumbent or upright.
Position the head in a lateral position so the interpupillary line is perpendicular to the film and the midsagittal plane is parallel to the plane of the film.
Direct the CR with a 25° caudal angle to a point 1” anterior and 1” superior to the EAM that is up.
Both the left and right laterals must be completed. Side down is side demonstrated.
TMJ - Open Mouth Axiolateral (2 - 1 of each side)
The principles and positioning are the same as the closed mouth laterals except the technologist should have the patient ___ their ___ as ___ as possible.
Both ___ and ___ laterals must be completed. Side ___ is side demonstrated.
Be sure to use ___ on all films to note ___ and ___ vs ___ mouth.
TMJ - Open Mouth Axiolateral (2 - 1 of each side)
The principles and positioning are the same as the closed mouth laterals except the technologist should have the patient open their mouth as wide as possible.
Both left and right laterals must be completed. Side down is side demonstrated.
Be sure to use markers on all films to note laterality and open vs closed mouth.
