3 major types of skin cancers (MC)
basal- mc- intense sun exposure
squamous- sun exposure in elderly
Malignent- develops from pigmented moles (3rd/4th decade)
SS- basal cell, squamous, malignant melanoma
basal- nodular, skin coloured, pearly outer border w eroded ulcerated centre
squamous- scaly red papule that ulcerates, larger
MM- asymmetry, border irregular, >6mm diameter
Colorectal carcinoma ss
4th mc cancer
ss- asymptomatic, abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, weakness, anemia
Pancreatic cancer- mc loc, ss (Mc signs 3)
abdominal pain + weight loss + jaundice in >50= pancreatic cancer until proven otherwise
head of pancreas (mc loc, 70% of time)
lung cancer ss
-a new cough that doesnt go away
-hemoptysis, SOB, severe pain in shoulder radiating towards axilla and scalp**
-Horners syndrome
*leading cause of death in men and women
Uterine cancer- mc types (2)
Uterine fibroid or Leiomyoma
Uterine cancer- ss
vaginal bleeding after menopause, bleeding bw periods, pelvic pain, abdominal fullness, gas/contipation
Two types of lymphomas and age
Hodgkins- 20+, >55
Non hodgkins- 20-40
lymphoma px
milar enlargement, osteolytic poorly defined lesion, ivory vert, REED-Sternberg cells
Leukemias- 4 types
- Acute lymphoid leukemia- mc children
- Chronic lymphoid leukemia- >50y
- Acute myeloid leukemia- myeloid cells, older
- Chronic myeloid leukemia- older patients, Philedelphia chromosome
multiple myeloma– ss
bone pain due to expansion of marrow, anemia, mechanical pain of insidious onset and progressing severity
multiple myeloma- px (xray/lab)
- path fx
-punched out lytic lesions, collapsed vert
-M spike
-Bence jones proteins
latent period of osteomyelitis in extremities and spine
extremities- 10 days
Spine- 21 days
