Dizziness/Inner Ear conditions Flashcards
cervicogenic vertigo; ss/px/pom
ss- dizziness that is also associated w neck pain and limited c/s rom
px- rotary chair test I+II + but dix hall pike -ve
POM- conserve
BPPV- ss/px/pom
ss- dizziness, vertigo, loss of balance related to positional changes, causes abnormal rhythmic eye movements when occring
px- rotary chair + and dix hal pike +
POM- conservative, Epleys maneuver to reposition
Menieres Disease
ss- disorder of inner ear, episodic attacks of tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss, aural fullness, vertigo lasting minutes to hours
px- 2 episodes of vertigo each lasting 20mins-hour, hearing loss verified by test , sensineural loss
POM- conserve
Labyrinthitis/vestibular neuronitis - acute vs convelecnet phase
ss- vertibular nerve becomes inflamed, causing contnoius dizziness, nausea + hearing loss
acute- CONSTANT
nystagmus (toward affect ear), severe vertigo and imbalance
Convalescent- imbalance and motion sickness lasting days to weeks
Difference bw labyrinthitis and vestibular
Neuronitis
labyrinthitis-tinnitus + hearing loss ( inflammation of both vestibular and cochlear portions)
Neuronitis- no hearing loss
Otitis externa- ss/px/pom
ss- pain (if acute) aggravated by movement of the auricle, otorrhea (discharge), conductive hearing loss
px- otoscope analysis
Acoustic Neuroma
s/s- Typically arises from a schwannoma growing on the vestibular nerve causing hearing loss, tinnitus, unsteadiness and vertigo
Myringitis- ss, px, POM
ss- middle ear inflammation and effusion, peak bw 6-15 m due to viral infection.
px- otoscopic exam
pom- antibiotics/antivirals
