16
Q

The characteristic that all lipids have in common

A

they are hydrophobic or non polar

17
Q

What is a hydrocarbon?

A

A molecule made up of mostly C’s and H’s

18
Q

Why are lipids non-polar?

A

Because the majority of all lipid molecules are C’s and H’s

19
Q

What is a triglyceride made up of?

A

1 gylcerol + 3 fatty acids

20
Q

What are the two parts of a fatty acid molecule?

A

the head (carboxyl group- COOH) and the tail (hydrocarbons)

21
Q

What are two types of fatty acids?

A

saturated and unsaturated

22
Q

How do saturated and unsaturated fats differ?

A

Saturated fats have all single bonds between the carbons in the tail and unsaturated fats have one or more double bonds between the carbons in the tail.

23
Q

Differentiate between a monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid.

A

monounsaturated fatty acid has one double bond while polyunsaturated fatty acid has more than one double bond
