M1 - Connective Tissue Flashcards
CT proper
Variety of dif types of CT, primary cell is fibroblast
Extracellular matrix
Produced by cells of that CT, ground substance and protein fibers
Ground substance
Found between fibers and cells of CT, protects body structures and holds fluids in tissue
Protein fibers
Provide support
Elastic fibers
Allows structures to stretch and recoil back to og shape
Collagen fibers
Very strong, flexible, and provide strength and structural support, resist strong or frequent forces
Reticular fibers
Less common, provide scaffolding for structure and provide space for blood cells to travel thru
Loose CT
Areolar, Adipose, Reticular
Areolar
Widely distributed, highly vascular, contains all 3 fiber types, fill spaces in body
Adipose
Adipocytes (fat cells), highly vascular, provides fat as fuel, insulates against heat loss, stores energy, hormones, water, and vitamins, supports and protects organs
Reticular
Network of reticular fibers in loose ground substance, forms scaffolding, provides space while also maintaining structure
Dense CT
Dense regular, Dense irregular, Elastic
Dense regular
Parallel thick collagen fibers, can resist pull in one direction
Dense irregular
Many thick collagen fibers in a random arrangement, resist pull in multiple directions
Elastic
mainly elastic fibers, can stretch and recoil
