Lymphatic System Flashcards
Lymphatic System
Immune
One way flow towards heart
Interstitial fluid
GI lipids- absorb
Lymph Primary Organs
Bone Marrow
Thymus- where immune cells come from
Lymph Secondary Organs
Nodes/Nodules (Tonsils)
MALT/GALT (Mucousal associated lymphatic tissue)
Spleen: Filter blood, remove dead blood cells
Structure/Function of Lymph vessels
Dead end, one way, valves, use skeletal muscle contractions to move
Removes extracellular fluid so we don’t bloat
Lymphatic ducts highly entangled in capillaries
Lymph node function/location
Screen for infectious material Cervical- neck Axillary- armpit Popliteal- behind knee Inguinal- Pelvis/groin
Thoracic duct lymph
Drains whole left side of body and entire lower half
Right duct lymph
Right arm and right chest drainage
Issues with Lymphatic system
Edema: Extra fluid in extracellular spaces
Tonsillitis: Inflamed tonsils
Metastasis: Cancer cells move through lymph system
Lymphoma: Cancer of lymph system
