Lymphatic/Immune System Flashcards
What is lymph?
Extra fluid that drains from cells and tissues; and isn’t reabsorbed into the capillaries
Describe the direction of the lymph flow
Goes from the tissues towards the heart only
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
To return excess tissue fluid to blood vascular system
What are the most important 2 types of WBCs that provide specific immunity? Describe their functions
- T-Lymphocyte : Killer T-cells; kills invading pathogens
- B-Lymphocyte: Makes antibodies
Compare and contrast b/w blood capillary and lymph capillary
Blood capillary: Delivers and collects fluid; cells can’t enter capillary
Lymph capillary: Only collects fluid; very permeable so cells are able to enter capillary
What is lacteal?
Specialized lymphatic capillaries in the villi of small intestines
receives digested fats
What is a fatty lymph called?
chyle
What are the 2 major lymphatic ducts?
- right lymphatic duct
- thoracic duct
Which one collects abouts 75% of the total body tissue fluid?
Thoracic duct
What are the functions of the lymph nodes?
Cleanse the lymph of pathogens
Do lymph nodes have more or less afferent vessels than efferent vessels? Explain.
Lymph nodes would have more afferent vessels because we need less efferent vessels to prevent the fluid from leaving the lymph node quickly
Gives examples of 4 lymphoid organs
- tonsils
- appendix
- thymus
- spleen
What is the largest lymphatic organ?
Spleen
What is elephantiasis?
Transmitted by infected mosquitos, nematode worms block lymphatic ducts
Causes swelling
