lymph Flashcards
what is lymph
interstitial fluid collected in lymph vessels
what is plasma
fluid component of blood in cells, holds various proteins and dissolved substances.
what is interstitial fluid(tissue fluid)
the plasma forced out of capillary walls by systolic pressure in heart. the tissue fluid bathes tissues, picking up substances(antigens and FAs)
what are lymph vessels
one way movement of lymph
what are the layers of lymph vessels?
- inner- layer of endothelial cells
- middle- muscle and elastic layer
- outer- fibrous collagen layer
what are lymph nodes
they function to screen lymph of antigens and remove foreign substances
what are all the lymph nodes
pre-auricular, post auricular, occipital, submental, submandibular, superficial cervical, supratrochlear, inguinal, popliteal
what are lymphatic ducts
vessels from right side(arm, chest, neck, head) converge at right subclavian vein
vessels from rest of the body converge thoracic duct and drain into left subclavian vein
what does thoracic duct extend from
Cisterna Chyli
lymph moves by…
Peristalsis Skeletal muscle contraction Drawing action(breathing) Compression from arteries gravity
lymph flow is aided with
- exercise(drawing action)
- lymphatic drainage massage
- vacuum suction
- dry brush
major functions of lymphatic system
- handles overflow of blood fluid volume; keeps is constant
- drainage of excess fluid from interstitial spaces b/w cells and return it to bloodstream
- directs lymph to lymph nodes to be screened for antigens
- transport of leukocytes(wbc)
- lipid transport from intestines
what is the main functions of lymph nodes?
to screen for antigens and remove foreign substances
lymphatic vessel that collects most lymph in the body is…
thoracic duct
which other system is lymphatic circulation closely assosicated to?
vascular circulation
