endocrine system Flashcards
hormone that regulates metabolism
thyroxine
acromegaly is from abnormal increased function of…
pituitary gland
what are glands made of…
they are made of epithelial tissue comprised of secretory cells.
what are endocrine glands
endocrine glands secrete glands directly into the bloodstream
exocrine glands ..
secrete substances outside of tissues via a duct, and end up outside of the body
what are hormones
proteins secreted by endocrine glands that have an effect on distant glands or target organs
negative feedback
response counteracts the stimulus, shutting off the response loop
positive feedback
response reinforces the stimulus sending the parameter farther than the setpoint
hypothalamus
controls the pituitary gland; maintains homeostasis
pituitary gland
controls many of the endocrine glands
- adenohyphosis(adrenal gland) secretes most hormones
- neurohyphosis(posterior gland)
fsh
follicle stimulating hormone, growth of ovarian hormone, which in tunr produces estrogen
-stim. development of sperm
LH
lutenising hormone, stimulates ovulation, and development of corpus luteum, in turn secretes estrogen
ACTH
stim. adrenal glands to secrete hormones
- stim.melanocytes
TSH
thyroid stimulating hormone, stimulates thyroid to produce thyroxine
gh
growth hormone, stim. growth of body tissues
