Lungs Flashcards
1
Q
Where are the lungs?
A
Upper part of body - thorax
2
Q
What is an iron lung and how does it work?
A
- It is a metal cylinder in which a patient lies in. It helps patients with breathing difficulty to breathe.
- Negative pressure ventilators.
- The patient is placed in a machine airtight from the neck down.
- A vacuum is placed outside the patient’s thorax.
- The air pressure outside is decreased.
- As a result, air is drawn into the lungs.
- As the vacuum is released, the elasticity of the lungs, diaphragm ad chest wall cause exhalation.
3
Q
What are the lungs protected by?
A
Ribcage
4
Q
What is the abdomen?
A
Lower part of the body
5
Q
What seperates the lungs from the abdomen?
A
Diaphragm
6
Q
What does the breathing system do?
A
Take air into and out of body
Oxygen from air diffuses into bloodstream
Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the bloodstream into air
7
Q
How does air move into the lungs?
A
Ribcage moves out and up Diaphragm becomes flatter Volume of thorax increases Pressure in thorax decreases Air drawn in
8
Q
How does air move out of the lungs?
A
Changes when air moving into the lungs REVERSED Ribcage moves down and in Diaphragm becomes domed (curved) Volume of thorax decreases Pressure increases Air forced out
9
Q
What is ventilation?
A
The movement of air into and out of the lungs
