Q

What is an iron lung and how does it work?

A
  • It is a metal cylinder in which a patient lies in. It helps patients with breathing difficulty to breathe.
  • Negative pressure ventilators.
  • The patient is placed in a machine airtight from the neck down.
  • A vacuum is placed outside the patient’s thorax.
  • The air pressure outside is decreased.
  • As a result, air is drawn into the lungs.
  • As the vacuum is released, the elasticity of the lungs, diaphragm ad chest wall cause exhalation.
