B2.3.1 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation of photosynthesis?
Light energy + carbon dioxide + water –> glucose + oxygen
Where is chlorophyll found?
In chloroplasts in some plant cells and algae.
What is the role of chlorophyll?
Absorbing light energy.
How is light energy used?
Coverting carbon dioxide (in the air) and water (from the soil) into sugar (glucose)
During photosynthesis, what is released as a by-product?
Oxygen
What might the rate of photosynthesis be limited by?
Low temperature
Shortage of carbon dioxide
Shortage of light
How is the glucose in photosynthesis stored?
It maybe converted into insoluble starch for storage.
What is needed for plant’s respiration?
Glucose –> Plant cells use some of the glucose produced during photosynthesis for respiration.
What is gluclose in plants and algae used for?
- Producing fat or oil for storage.
- Producing cellulose, which strengthens the cell wall.
- Producing proteins.
What do plants use to produce proteins?
Nitrate ions that are absorbed from the soil.
