Inheritance Flashcards
What is phenotype?
The physical appearance of the characteristic
What is genotype?
The genetic make up of the characteristic
The word to describe “both alleles are the same”?
Homozygous
The word to describe “both alleles are different”?
Heterozygous
“Recessive allele”?
Controls the development of
characteristics only if the dominant allele is
not present.
“Dominant allele”?
Controls the development of a
characteristic when it is present on only one
of the chromosomes
What is the advantage of sexual reproduction and why?
Gives rise to variation.
Gametes fuse –> One of each pair of alleles come from each parent.
What are chromosomes made up of and which structure does it have?
Large molecules of DNA.
Double helix structure.
What is a gene and what does each gene code for?
A gene is a small section of DNA.
A particular combination
of amino acids which make a specific protein.
What is the use of DNA fingerprinting?
Identifying individuals.
